Why does my AI writing sound nothing like me?
// The short answer
Usually because you’ve asked AI to make something out of nothing. With no real input from you, it falls back on the average of everyone else. Feed it your own words first, like a recording of you talking, and ask it to shape what you actually said.
That feeling in your tummy
You read it back and there’s that little feeling in the bottom of your tummy. It doesn’t quite sound like you. It hasn’t got your edge. It’s missing your quirks.
Most people ask AI to think for them before they’ve fed it their own brain. That’s the whole problem, really.
Feed it you first
Put the real you in at the start. The best source I know is a recording of you actually talking: a live show, a client call, a voice note on the school run.
Your transcript will be rambly and full of mistakes. That’s exactly why it works. It’s the most “you” thing you’ve got.
“Be more human” doesn’t work
Telling AI to sound more human gets you nowhere. It needs to know what your nuances and rhythms actually are.
Watch for the tells
Long dashes everywhere. “It’s not about X, it’s about Y.” That second one drives me mad, and your audience spots both fast, because they’re using AI too.
And be careful about running your own writing through ChatGPT to tidy it up. It can turn into a debranding machine. Your personality goes in one end and something vanilla comes out the other.
