How do I decide who my show is for?

// The short answer

Pick one specific kind of person, ideally someone you’ve already worked with and loved. Then find the gap: what nobody in your space is talking about. Being specific is how people connect with you emotionally, and you can still help other people once they’ve found you.

Pick a lane

Your business might help lots of different people. For the show, try to pick one lane. You need to be specific, because that’s how you reach people’s emotions, and people make decisions with their emotions first.

Picture one person

Think about one actual person. “Mums aged 45 to 55” covers an enormous range of people with completely different things keeping them up at night.

The best way I know is to think of someone you’ve worked with before and loved. If you’re new, an old version of you works too, as long as you know them really well.

Find the gap

Next, what’s nobody in your space talking about? For my show, the people are solopreneurs with a service-based online business. The gap is practical strategy, with humans kept firmly in charge of the AI.

Make sure you’ll still enjoy it in a year

What could you talk about all day, every day, for the next year and still have steam left? Get that in there. If it isn’t fun for you, you won’t keep going.

“But I don’t want to shut people out”

I think of niching as a front door. Being specific helps the window shoppers walking past connect with you. Once they’re inside, you can show them everything else you do.
