Where should I host my live show?
// The short answer
Put the main version on YouTube, because videos keep getting found there for months or even years. Facebook and LinkedIn are useful for extra reach, but they stop showing a live very quickly. And make sure people can join your email list, because that’s the one place you actually own.
It’s all about shelf life
When I looked at this properly earlier this year, the difference was huge. Facebook deletes a live after 30 days. LinkedIn stops pushing it after 24 hours. YouTube will still be recommending the same video months, even years, later. Platforms change their rules, so check it for yourself.
So YouTube is home. Everything else is distribution.
You can go live in more than one place
You don’t have to pick just one. You can stream to several platforms at the same time, and point each audience at the event on their own platform. People don’t love being sent off somewhere else to watch, and the platforms don’t love it either.
And don’t forget your email list
YouTube is still rented. It’s a longer lease, but it’s their platform and their rules. Get people onto your email list too, so you can reach them whatever the algorithm decides to do next week.
