Do I need expensive equipment to start a podcast?
// The short answer
No. You can start with the laptop, webcam and microphone you already have. People are far more forgiving about sound and picture than you’d expect, especially on video, and a real conversation matters much more than perfect production.
You don’t need state-of-the-art tech
It’s really easy to talk yourself into thinking you need proper state-of-the-art tech for this. It’s just not the case.
Loads of people put off starting a podcast because it feels complicated, or expensive, or like one more massive thing to keep up with. I get it. I’d still start with what you’ve already got.
Video makes people more forgiving
Video is now the dominant podcast format, especially on Spotify. And when people can see you, they’re much less fussy about the sound, because their eyes are busy too.
Spend the effort on the show
People stick around because they like listening to you. Get the show going, and upgrade the kit once you know you’re sticking with it.
And please don’t let a gadget become the reason you haven’t started. That’s just avoidance with a delivery date.
