How far ahead should I promote a live show?

// The short answer

Not very far. Post the day before, and again 15 minutes before you go live. For your very first episode you can add a teaser a few days earlier, but a weekly live show doesn’t need a week-long campaign.

It’s just a live stream

I know. It feels like it should need more. It doesn’t. It’s a live stream, so there’s really no point promoting it a week before.

What I do is one post the day before, and one that says we’re going live in 15 minutes. That can go out as a post, in your stories, and to your email list if you’ve got one.

Your first episode is a little different

For the very first one, set the date about two weeks out and do a small tease a few days before. Something new is coming, can’t tell you what yet, that sort of thing. After that, you’re into the weekly rhythm.

Why so little works

A fixed weekly slot does most of the promoting for you. Once people know when you’re on each week, they don’t need a fortnight of reminders. They need a nudge.

And honestly, if promoting the show turns into a full-time job of its own, you’ll stop doing the show. I’d rather you kept doing the show.
