What’s the difference between a live show and a webinar?
// The short answer
A live show streams publicly to somewhere like YouTube, so anyone can find it and watch. A webinar brings people onto something like Zoom, so they have to sign up first. Webinars give you a closer room and people’s details. Live shows give you far more reach.
Three ways to run a show
I split it into three. The safe way is pre-recording. The scary way is a plain live stream. And the hairy scary merry way is live webinars, where you promote people onto Zoom to be in the room with you.
What a webinar gives you
People are properly in the room. They’ve signed up, so they’re on your list. It feels more like a workshop, and you can really talk to people.
If you run one, never just share the Zoom link. There’s zero leverage in that. Get people to sign up for it.
What a live show gives you
Reach. Anyone scrolling past can stop and watch, and the replay keeps working for months on YouTube. For most people starting out, I think a plain live stream is the right balance of leverage.
